Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy is a cell-based therapeutic developed by BHI Therapeutic Sciences (part of Blue Horizon International). The therapy utilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from Wharton's jelly, the gelatinous connective tissue found within the umbilical cord. These cells are characterized by high proliferation rates, multilineage differentiation potential, and low immunogenicity compared to adult-derived MSCs. The mechanism of action involves tissue repair and immunomodulation primarily through paracrine signaling, where the MSCs secrete bioactive molecules and factors that modulate the local microenvironment and promote regeneration. The therapy is being applied across a broad spectrum of indications, including autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, cardiac conditions, and orthopedic injuries.
