WJ-MSC cells (Wharton's Jelly-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells) are an allogeneic, cell-based biologic therapy derived from the Wharton's jelly of the human umbilical cord matrix. These cells are of epiblastic origin and express both human embryonic stem cell (hESC) and mesenchymal stem cell markers. In the context of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), WJ-MSCs are administered intravenously to reduce microvascular obstruction and hemorrhage following ischemia-reperfusion injury. The cells are believed to exert their therapeutic effects through integration into ischemic cardiac tissue and the secretion of paracrine factors that provide anti-inflammatory and regenerative signals. They are considered advantageous over autologous bone marrow-derived MSCs due to their non-tumorigenic and non-immunogenic properties, as well as their potential for rapid expansion as an off-the-shelf product.
