Overview

Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) are allogeneic multipotent cells harvested from the human umbilical cord. Developed by Hospital San Vicente Fundación, this cell therapy is being investigated for its regenerative potential in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy and a history of myocardial infarction. The therapeutic approach involves a dual delivery method: intramyocardial injection of WJ-MSCs around the infarcted zone and the placement of an epicardial extracellular matrix (ECM) patch seeded with the same cells during coronary revascularization surgery. The mechanism of action is based on the cells' ability to promote neomyogenesis and angiogenesis through the secretion of paracrine factors and potential differentiation, aimed at improving cardiac function and reducing adverse ventricular remodeling.
