Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from the umbilical cord matrix. Developed by Mahidol University, this specific cell therapy is being investigated for the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The cells are administered intravenously following therapeutic hypothermia to leverage their immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties. WJ-MSCs function primarily through paracrine mechanisms, secreting cytokines and growth factors that reduce neuroinflammation, inhibit apoptosis, and promote endogenous neural repair in the damaged neonatal brain. The SiSTEM-NEO trial evaluates the safety and efficacy of three consecutive daily doses of these cells in infants with moderate to severe HIE.
