Wharton's Jelly-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (WJMSC) are a population of multipotent progenitor cells harvested from the umbilical cord matrix. These cells are being investigated by the Medical University of Warsaw for the treatment of osteoarthritis in the knee, hip, and glenohumeral joints. WJMSCs possess significant immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, exerting their therapeutic effects primarily through paracrine signaling. They secrete a variety of cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles that help to reduce joint inflammation, inhibit the degradation of the extracellular matrix, and potentially stimulate endogenous cartilage repair mechanisms. In clinical trials led by the Medical University of Warsaw, these cells are sourced from the Polish Stem Cell Bank and administered via ultrasound-guided intra-articular injection.
