Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSC) combined with repetitive electromagnetic stimulation (rEMS) is an experimental regenerative therapy developed by Ankara University Technopolis (Ankara Universitesi Teknokent) and Bioretina Biotechnology for the treatment of toxic optic neuropathy. The therapy utilizes the paracrine and immunomodulatory properties of WJ-MSCs, which secrete neurotrophic factors and anti-inflammatory molecules to protect damaged optic nerve axons and promote mitochondrial ATP synthesis. This is complemented by rEMS, delivered via the Magnovision™ helmet device, which uses low-frequency electromagnetic fields to stimulate the visual pathways, rearrange ion channel balances, and restore axoplasmic flow. The combination has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for patients with vision loss resulting from exposure to toxins such as methanol, sildenafil, and amiodarone.
