This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from the Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord. Developed by the University Hospital of Nancy (CHRU de Nancy) in France, it is being evaluated for the treatment of moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) associated with COVID-19. The therapy works through potent immunomodulatory mechanisms, including the modulation of cytokine storms, enhancement of macrophage phagocytosis, and protection of lung epithelial cells. By secreting paracrine factors and interacting with immune cell subsets, these cells aim to reduce pulmonary inflammation, provide pro-angiogenic support, and promote tissue repair in critically ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation. The product was primarily tested in the MSC-COVID trial (NCT04625738), a Phase IIa randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
