Overview

Wharton's jelly stem cells (WJ-MSCs) are a population of mesenchymal stem cells harvested from the mucoid connective tissue of the umbilical cord. BHI Therapeutic Sciences is developing these cells as an allogeneic cell therapy for various conditions, including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and chronic inflammation. WJ-MSCs are characterized by their high proliferative capacity, low immunogenicity, and potent immunomodulatory properties. They exert therapeutic effects primarily through paracrine signaling, secreting a variety of cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles that promote tissue regeneration, reduce neuroinflammation, and modulate the immune response. The program is currently in preclinical development.
