Overview

Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) is an investigational cell therapy developed by researchers at Ankara University and Bioretina Inc. for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The therapy involves the subtenon injection of mesenchymal stem cells harvested from the Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord. These cells are thought to function through paracrine mechanisms, secreting exosomes that contain various growth factors and neurotrophins. This secretome is intended to provide neuroprotection, reduce apoptosis, and reactivate degenerated photoreceptor cells that are in a dormant phase, regardless of the underlying genetic mutation causing the disease. Clinical development has reached Phase 3, where the cells have been evaluated both as a monotherapy and in combination with repetitive electromagnetic stimulation (rEMS) delivered via the Magnovision device.
