Overview

BioXcellerator's Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) are an allogeneic cell therapy investigated for the treatment of severe COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). These stem cells are harvested from the umbilical cord's Wharton's jelly, a gelatinous substance surrounding the umbilical blood vessels. The therapy is designed to counteract pulmonary damage induced by SARS-CoV-2 through potent immunomodulatory effects, which help manage the systemic inflammation and 'cytokine storm' often seen in critically ill patients. Additionally, WJ-MSCs exhibit pro-angiogenic properties and provide protection to lung epithelial cells, potentially accelerating recovery and improving clinical outcomes. BioXcellerator initiated a Phase 1/2 randomized controlled trial in Colombia, with regulatory approval from INVIMA, to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenous infusions of these cells in combination with standard care.
