Overview

Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by Hanan Jafar and colleagues at the Cell Therapy Center, The University of Jordan. These cells are umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells cultured under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) conditions. The therapy is being evaluated for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, with the hypothesis that intravenous administration of these cells will reduce intestinal inflammation. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of neutrophil myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, which is expected to modify disease progression and potentially reduce the risk of colitis-associated cancer.
