Overview

Wharton's Jelly-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (WJMSCs) are a population of multipotent stromal cells harvested from the mucoid connective tissue of the human umbilical cord. These cells are highly valued in regenerative medicine due to their robust proliferative capacity, low immunogenicity, and potent immunomodulatory properties. WJMSCs function primarily through paracrine mechanisms, secreting a diverse secretome that includes anti-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-10 and TGF-beta), growth factors (like VEGF), and extracellular vesicles (exosomes). These factors promote tissue repair, stimulate angiogenesis, and modulate immune responses by inducing M2 macrophage polarization and suppressing T-cell activation. WJMSCs are currently being evaluated in clinical trials for a variety of conditions, including acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, type 1 diabetes, and ischemic cardiomyopathy, as well as for applications in wound healing and skin rejuvenation.
