Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells derived from the Wharton's jelly of human umbilical cords (WJMSCs). Developed by the Navy General Hospital in Beijing in collaboration with the Shenzhen Beike Cell Engineering Research Institute, the therapy is specifically designed for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), including ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). WJMSCs are primitive stromal cells that possess potent immunomodulatory, pro-angiogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Upon administration via intracoronary or intravenous infusion, these cells are thought to integrate into ischemic cardiac tissues and secrete paracrine factors that promote tissue regeneration, attenuate adverse ventricular remodeling, and improve overall heart function. The therapy has been evaluated in clinical trials, such as the WANIAMI trial and NCT01291329, to assess its safety and efficacy in the acute phase following reperfusion therapy.
