Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) is an investigational cell-based therapy developed by Polski Bank Komorek Macierzystych (PBKM) for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Classified as an Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product (ATMP), the therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the Wharton's jelly of umbilical cord tissue. These cells are administered via intrathecal injection and are thought to function by inhibiting motor neuron apoptosis, reducing the expression of inflammatory factors, and increasing the expression of neurotrophic factors, thereby providing a neuroprotective environment. The product is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess its safety and impact on the immune system of ALS patients.
