This combination therapy involves the use of Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) and teriparatide (a recombinant form of parathyroid hormone) for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). WJ-MSCs are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into osteoblasts, facilitating new bone formation and reducing fracture susceptibility. Teriparatide acts as an anabolic agent by stimulating osteoblast activity and increasing bone mineral density. In clinical trials led by Dr. Inbo Han at CHA University, the treatment involves an intramedullary injection of WJ-MSCs into the fractured vertebra followed by daily subcutaneous injections of teriparatide. This dual approach aims to enhance bone regeneration and improve clinical outcomes such as pain relief and bone density in postmenopausal women.
