Overview

Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (WJ-UC-MSC) are multipotent stem cells harvested from the mucoid connective tissue of the umbilical cord. Developed by Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) for the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), these cells are administered intravenously to leverage their potent immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties. The therapeutic rationale is based on the cells' ability to migrate to sites of injury and secrete paracrine factors that modulate the systemic inflammatory response and reduce chronic neuroinflammation. By dampening the secondary injury cascade, the treatment aims to promote neurogenesis, angiogenesis, and functional neurological recovery in patients who remain unresponsive following the acute phase of brain trauma.
