Overview

Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) are multipotent stem cells harvested from the gelatinous tissue of the umbilical cord. Developed by Shenzhen Boya Ganzi Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of Boyalife Group) for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, this cell therapy leverages the immunomodulatory and regenerative properties of MSCs. When administered via intra-articular injection, WJ-MSCs exert therapeutic effects primarily through paracrine signaling, secreting a variety of anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that modulate the joint microenvironment. These cells help to suppress synovial inflammation, inhibit the activity of pro-inflammatory macrophages and T-cells, and promote the proliferation of chondrocytes and the synthesis of extracellular matrix components. This approach aims to slow the progression of joint degeneration and facilitate the repair of damaged articular cartilage.
