Overview

WR 279,396 is a topical combination drug consisting of paromomycin (15%) and gentamicin (0.5%) formulated as a cream for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Both active ingredients are aminoglycoside antibiotics that inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. The combination was developed to improve efficacy and tolerability compared to paromomycin monotherapy. Clinical trials have shown that WR 279,396 provides higher cure rates for cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania panamensis than paromomycin alone[1][3][10]. The product has been evaluated in phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials.
