Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xaracoll is a **bioresorbable collagen-matrix implant** containing **bupivacaine HCl**, an amide local anesthetic, as the active pharmaceutical ingredient. Each implant has 100 mg bupivacaine HCl (equivalent to 88.8 mg bupivacaine) homogeneously dispersed in 75 mg purified type I bovine collagen. The implant is placed directly into the surgical site, where it provides **immediate and extended local release of bupivacaine** for postsurgical analgesia (up to 24 hours) by gradual dissolution and enzymatic hydrolysis of the collagen matrix, which resorbs within about two months post-implantation. It is indicated for the management of acute postsurgical pain in adults following open inguinal hernia repair with mesh. The collagen acts as an **inert delivery matrix** and does not contribute therapeutic benefit beyond drug delivery. The FDA approved Xaracoll based on phase 3 studies demonstrating significant reductions in pain scores and opioid consumption versus placebo.
