Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xelpros (latanoprost ophthalmic emulsion) is a benzalkonium chloride (BAK)-free formulation of the prostaglandin F2α analogue latanoprost, developed by Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC). It is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Unlike the reference latanoprost formulation (Xalatan), which contains BAK as a preservative, Xelpros is formulated using a proprietary Swollen Micelle Microemulsion (SMM) technology and is BAK-free, which may reduce ocular surface irritation and improve tolerability for patients sensitive to BAK. Latanoprost acts as a selective FP prostanoid receptor agonist, increasing the outflow of aqueous humor primarily through the uveoscleral pathway.
