Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xiao'er Xuanfei Pingchuan Decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine) for the treatment of pediatric asthma. It is primarily indicated for use during the acute exacerbation stage of asthma in children, characterized by lung qi obstruction and phlegm accumulation. The formula is designed to disperse lung qi, resolve phlegm, and relieve wheezing. Pharmacological studies suggest that the decoction exerts its therapeutic effects by modulating the Th1/Th2 cytokine balance, specifically by downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Interleukin-4 (IL-4) and Interleukin-5 (IL-5) while upregulating Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). This modulation leads to a reduction in serum Immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and inhibits airway eosinophilic inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. As a hospital-made preparation (院内制剂), it is widely utilized within the clinical practice of the developing institution.
