Overview
Xiongdan Wan is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation primarily composed of bear gall (Xiongdan), which contains high concentrations of bile acids such as tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). Traditionally utilized in Chinese medicine for its ability to clear heat, detoxify, and improve vision, it is currently being evaluated as a monotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in clinical trials led by the Shanghai Mental Health Center. The drug's potential antidepressant mechanism is thought to involve neuroprotective effects, reduction of endoplasmic reticulum stress, and modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, possibly through the activation of the TGR5 receptor and the BDNF/TrkB signaling pathway.
