Overview

The combination of xylitol, lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, and lactoferrin is used in over-the-counter oral hygiene products designed to relieve the symptoms of dry mouth (xerostomia). These products, which come in forms like mouth rinses, gels, sprays, and toothpastes, work by mimicking and supplementing the natural protective mechanisms of human saliva. The components include naturally occurring salivary enzymes and proteins (lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, lactoferrin) and the sugar alcohol xylitol. Lactoperoxidase is part of an enzymatic system that generates antimicrobial substances, lysozyme breaks down bacterial cell walls, and lactoferrin binds to iron, inhibiting bacterial growth. Xylitol is a non-cariogenic sweetener that stimulates saliva flow and inhibits the growth of bacteria associated with tooth decay, such as *Streptococcus mutans*. Together, these ingredients moisturize the oral cavity, help maintain a balanced oral microbiome, and protect against the complications of reduced saliva, such as dental caries and oral discomfort.
