Yttrium-90 silicate is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical consisting of the high-energy beta-emitting isotope yttrium-90 incorporated into a colloidal silicate carrier. It is primarily indicated for radiosynovectomy (RSO), a procedure involving the intra-articular injection of the radiocolloid to treat chronic, persistent synovitis associated with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory joint diseases, particularly in large joints like the knee. The yttrium-90 isotope has a physical half-life of 64.1 hours and emits beta particles with a maximum energy of 2.27 MeV and a mean tissue penetration of approximately 3.6 mm. This localized radiation effectively ablates the hypertrophied synovial membrane while minimizing damage to deeper structures and the overlying skin, thereby reducing joint effusion, alleviating pain, and delaying joint destruction.
