Overview

Zhixiangpi + baizhi is a combination of two traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) botanical extracts: the peel of Citrus aurantium (Zhixiangpi) and the root of Angelica dahurica (Baizhi). This combination is primarily utilized in the treatment of vitiligo, typically formulated as a topical tincture. The therapeutic mechanism is driven by the presence of linear furanocoumarins (psoralens), such as xanthotoxin (8-methoxypsoralen) and bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen), which are found in both herbs. These compounds act as photosensitizers that intercalate into the DNA of melanocytes; upon exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) light, they form covalent adducts with pyrimidine bases, stimulating melanocyte proliferation and increasing tyrosinase activity. This process facilitates melanogenesis and the subsequent repigmentation of depigmented skin patches, effectively functioning as a natural form of psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy.
