Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zhuangyuan Wan (also known as Jangwon-hwan) is a traditional multi-component herbal formula recorded in the Donguibogam, a classic Korean medical text. It has traditionally been used to treat memory decline, forgetfulness, palpitations, and insomnia. Modern pharmacological studies, including preclinical research supported by Kwangdong Pharmaceutical, demonstrate that Zhuangyuan Wan improves memory performance and cognitive function. Its mechanism of action is associated with the enhancement of cholinergic signaling (including upregulation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M1) and the promotion of synaptic plasticity (via upregulation of metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 and synaptic plasticity-related markers such as synaptophysin, PSD95, Shank3, and Syn1). In April 2026, Kwangdong Pharmaceutical launched Gear Care (기어케어정), a modernized over-the-counter tablet formulation of this 11-herb prescription, for the treatment of memory decline and forgetfulness.
