Overview

This is a combination antiretroviral therapy consisting of zidovudine (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor), didanosine (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor), and efavirenz (a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor). It is used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. The combination works by inhibiting HIV viral replication through multiple mechanisms, preventing the virus from producing new copies of itself. The combination of zidovudine and didanosine has been shown to produce larger and more sustained increases in CD4+ cell counts compared to zidovudine alone. Clinical trials have compared this combination with other antiretroviral regimens.
