Overview

This drug is a combination of three antiretroviral agents used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection: **zidovudine** (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, NRTI), **lamivudine** (also an NRTI), and **indinavir** (a protease inhibitor). The regimen leverages synergistic antiviral activity; in vitro and clinical data demonstrate that the addition of lamivudine to zidovudine plus indinavir produces greater reduction in viral load and improved prevention of resistance compared to the double-drug regimen[1]. Zidovudine and lamivudine inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase through chain termination, while indinavir inhibits the HIV-1 protease, preventing viral replication and maturation. This triple therapy has been shown to achieve reductions in HIV-1 RNA below assay detection limits in a significant fraction of patients[1].
