Overview

Zinc + green tea extract + ascorbic acid is an investigational oral combination supplement developed by the University of Missouri-Columbia for the treatment of community-acquired respiratory viral infections, including the common cold, influenza-like illness, and COVID-19. The formulation, studied under the trial name 'ZiPhenol', consists of zinc citrate, green tea extract (standardized for polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate), and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of green tea polyphenols to act as zinc ionophores, facilitating the transport of zinc into cells where it can inhibit viral RNA-directed RNA polymerase and other replication mechanisms. Ascorbic acid is included to provide additional antioxidant support and enhance immune function during infection.
