Overview

Zinc + manganese (MET-014) is an investigational intravaginal tablet formulation containing zinc and manganese as active mineral ingredients, developed by Metrodora Therapeutics. It is being evaluated in a Phase 1 placebo-controlled clinical trial for the prevention of recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV) in premenopausal women. The drug is administered intravaginally and is studied both alone and in combination with Low Iron bovine lactoferrin (MTbLF) intravaginal tablets (MET-012), given alongside oral metronidazole for 7 days and continued for 12 weeks total. The proposed mechanism involves competitive metal ion interference: zinc and manganese may compete with iron for uptake by BV-associated bacteria (which require iron for growth), thereby starving pathogenic bacteria and supporting restoration of a healthy, Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiome.
