Overview

This oral care formulation is a combination of zinc chloride (0.6% w/w), isopropyl methylphenol (IPMP, 0.1% w/w), and sodium fluoride, developed by GSK for use in silica-based toothpastes. The active ingredients work synergistically to provide antimicrobial, anti-caries, and malodor-control benefits. Isopropyl methylphenol (also known as o-cymen-5-ol) is a phenolic antimicrobial agent that effectively penetrates dental biofilms to target plaque bacteria. Zinc chloride provides additional antimicrobial effects and neutralizes volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) responsible for halitosis (bad breath). Sodium fluoride serves as the anti-caries agent by providing fluoride ions that promote enamel remineralization and increase acid resistance. The formulation is used to maintain gingival health, reduce dental plaque and gingival bleeding, and prevent tooth decay without compromising fluoride bioavailability.
