Overview

This is a combination of three inorganic compounds—zinc chloride, sodium citrate, and fluoride—primarily used in oral health products such as mouthwashes and dentifrices. Each component contributes to oral hygiene through different mechanisms: - Zinc chloride acts as an antimicrobial agent, helping reduce dental plaque and control bad breath. - Sodium citrate can function as a buffering agent and may help reduce tooth sensitivity. - Fluoride (commonly in the form of sodium fluoride or stannous fluoride) is well established for its role in preventing dental caries by enhancing remineralization of enamel and inhibiting demineralization. The combination is intended to manage oral infections like gingivitis, dental plaque, bad breath, and to maintain good oral hygiene. It may also be used after dental procedures to aid healing and prevent infection[4][6][8]. The mechanism involves antimicrobial action (zinc), buffering/anti-sensitivity effects (sodium citrate), and enamel strengthening/anticaries activity (fluoride). However, some evidence suggests that zinc salts such as zinc citrate can reduce the uptake of fluoride into enamel by forming surface precipitates[6][8].
