Overview

ZnO@Quercetin is a nanoparticle-based therapeutic candidate consisting of wurtzite-type zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles functionalized with the flavonoid quercetin. Specifically designed for the treatment of human metastatic ovarian cancer, these nanoparticles (averaging 20-25 nm in size) exhibit potent in vitro cytotoxic activity. The mechanism of action involves the generation of intracellular oxidative stress and the depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential, which subsequently activates the intrinsic apoptosis signaling pathway. This leads to late-stage apoptosis in human ovarian cancer cells, such as the PA-1 cell line.
