Zirconium-89 + Nanocoll (89Zr-Nanocoll) is an investigational radiopharmaceutical used for high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET/CT) lymphoscintigraphy and sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping. It is prepared by labeling human serum albumin (HSA) nanocolloid particles, sourced from the Nanocoll kit, with the positron-emitting radioisotope zirconium-89. Upon interstitial or peritumoral injection, the colloidal particles travel through the lymphatic vessels and are sequestered via phagocytosis by macrophages within the functional sinuses of the sentinel lymph nodes. The 78.4-hour half-life of zirconium-89, compared to the 6-hour half-life of the conventional technetium-99m tracer, allows for a longer imaging window and the detection of lymph nodes with slow drainage patterns. The use of PET imaging provides superior spatial resolution and three-dimensional localization over traditional SPECT, which is particularly advantageous in complex anatomical regions such as the head and neck.
