Overview

The zoonotic influenza (H5N8) vaccine, surface antigen, inactivated, adjuvanted, is a monovalent vaccine candidate developed for pandemic preparedness against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Developed in collaboration with the University of Antwerp and GSK, the vaccine contains purified surface antigens (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) from the H5N8 virus strain. It is formulated with GSK's proprietary AS03 adjuvant system, an oil-in-water emulsion composed of squalene, DL-alpha-tocopherol, and polysorbate 80. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce high titers of neutralizing antibodies against the H5 hemagglutinin, which prevents the virus from binding to and entering host cells. This vaccine is specifically designed to address the threat of zoonotic transmission from birds to humans, particularly following outbreaks of H5N8 in poultry and wild birds.
