Overview

Herpes zoster vaccine recombinant, adjuvanted (brand name: Shingrix) is a non-live, recombinant subunit vaccine developed by GSK for the prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) and its complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia. The vaccine consists of the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) glycoprotein E (gE) antigen, which is the most abundant glycoprotein expressed by VZV-infected cells, combined with the AS01B adjuvant system. AS01B is a liposome-based adjuvant containing 3-O-desacyl-4'-monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) and QS-21, designed to enhance the CD4+ T-cell and antibody-mediated immune response. It is administered as a two-dose intramuscular series and is indicated for adults aged 50 years and older, as well as immunocompromised adults aged 18 years and older.
