Overview
Zuoyu + 5-fluorouracil is a combination therapy comprising the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula Zuoyu and the antimetabolite chemotherapy agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Developed by researchers at the Jiangnan University Affiliated Hospital (Wuxi Fourth People's Hospital), this combination is primarily utilized in the treatment of gastric cancer. The Zuoyu formula is designed to work synergistically with 5-FU, aiming to enhance the anti-tumor efficacy of the chemotherapy while mitigating common side effects such as gastrointestinal toxicity and myelosuppression. 5-fluorouracil functions by inhibiting thymidylate synthase, thereby blocking the synthesis of thymidine monophosphate, which is essential for DNA replication and repair. This combination represents an integrative approach to oncology, combining standard cytotoxic agents with herbal medicine to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
