It involves the conversion of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate to 2,3-BPG by bisphosphoglycerate mutase and the subsequent hydrolysis of 2,3-BPG to 3-phosphoglycerate by bisphosphoglycerate phosphatase. This pathway is crucial for adapting to hypoxic conditions and ensuring efficient oxygen delivery to tissues.
