Overview

28S ribosomal protein S35, mitochondrial (MRPS35) is a structural component of the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (28S), required for mitochondrial protein synthesis. The protein is encoded by a nuclear gene, translated in the cytoplasm, and then imported into mitochondria, where it assembles into the mitoribosome. It is essential for the translation of mitochondrial-encoded proteins, which are crucial for the function of the oxidative phosphorylation system. The MRPS35 gene is highly conserved and expresses in a wide range of tissues, with loss-of-function generally being lethal, highlighting its essential role in cellular energy metabolism. No drugs are known to specifically target MRPS35, and it is not considered a therapeutic target, but variants in MRPS35 or related proteins may result in mitochondrial disease phenotypes[1][3][8].
