28S ribosomal protein S6, mitochondrial (MRPS6) is a nuclear-encoded protein that is a component of the small 28S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome)[2][3][1]. The protein plays an essential structural and functional role in mitochondrial protein synthesis, facilitating translation of proteins within the mitochondrion. Unlike cytoplasmic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes have a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio, and their protein components, such as MRPS6, show significant sequence divergence from their prokaryotic counterparts, complicating recognition by sequence homology. Mutations or expression changes in MRPS6 have been linked to some disease phenotypes, but MRPS6 itself is not a direct therapeutic target[2][3].
