Overview

28S ribosomal protein S7, mitochondrial (MRPS7) is a structural protein encoded by the nuclear genome and localized to mitochondria, where it forms part of the small 28S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. MRPS7 is essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis and overall mitochondrial function. It participates in ribosome assembly and ensures fidelity of translation within the mitochondria. Mutations in the MRPS7 gene are associated with mitochondrial diseases, including combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency and sensorineural deafness. MRPS7 itself is not directly targeted by drugs, but mitochondrial ribosomes as a whole may be affected by certain antibiotics and anti-cancer agents
