Overview

Delta 7,8-isomerase (EBP), also known as cholestenol delta-isomerase or 3β-hydroxysteroid-Δ8,Δ7-isomerase (EC 5.3.3.5), is an enzyme that catalyzes the isomerization of a double bond in sterol molecules from the Δ8 position to the Δ7 position within the B-ring of sterols. This reaction is a crucial step in cholesterol biosynthesis, converting Δ8(9)-sterols into their corresponding Δ7-isomers. The enzyme is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. Mutations in EBP are linked with X-linked chondrodysplasia punctata type II. Several drugs, including tamoxifen and clomiphene, can inhibit Delta 7,8-isomerase activity.
