3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A synthase 1 (soluble) pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene
01

Overview

The 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A synthase 1 pseudogene is a non-functional DNA sequence classified as a pseudogene. It closely resembles the active HMGCS1 gene, which encodes an enzyme important for cholesterol biosynthesis, but instead lacks the ability to encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as this arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and often accumulate mutations that disable protein-coding potential. Most pseudogenes do not have biological functions, though a few can participate in regulation of gene expression via noncoding RNA mechanisms—as described for other pseudogenes, not specifically for this locus. This pseudogene is not considered a therapeutic target, lacks interaction with drugs, and is not used as a biomarker. There are no known safety or therapeutic considerations associated with this locus.

Biological functions

Other (Some pseudogenes are transcribed and may participate in gene regulation as noncoding RNAs, including roles as microRNA decoys or sources of siRNAs, but HMGCS1 pseudogene does not have established functions of this type in the literature)

Disease associations

Other (Pseudogenes can play regulatory roles in diseases, including cancer, but there is no specific evidence for a direct disease role of this pseudogene)
