Overview

39S ribosomal protein L1, mitochondrial (MRPL1) is a nuclear-encoded protein that is a component of the large (39S) subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome). It belongs to the L1 family of ribosomal proteins and is essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. MRPL1 is involved in the structure and function of the mitoribosome, particularly in regulating tRNA positioning and release from the E-site during mitochondrial translation. Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomes differ from prokaryotic ribosomes in protein composition and function, reflecting the unique requirements for protein synthesis in mitochondria[1][4][3]. MRPL1 is a highly conserved ribosomal protein critical for mitochondrial protein synthesis; while essential for cellular energy metabolism, it is not a direct drug target nor a disease-specific biomarker according to current literature.
