Overview

39S ribosomal protein L10, mitochondrial (MRPL10) is a core structural protein of the large (39S) subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. It is encoded by a nuclear gene, imported into mitochondria, and is essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis necessary for energy production and cellular metabolism. Beyond its structural role, MRPL10 participates in the regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis and cellular redox balance, particularly in the context of cancer cells where it can modulate mitochondrial complex I activity and ATP production. While genetic variants have been linked to neurological disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorder), MRPL10 itself is not typically considered a direct therapeutic target or receptor. Proper function of MRPL10 is vital for cell viability, and deficiencies lead to impaired mitochondrial function and cellular energy deficit.
