Overview

39S ribosomal protein L19, mitochondrial (MRPL19) is a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial ribosomal protein that is a component of the large 39S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. It plays a structural role in mitochondrial protein synthesis by participating in the formation and function of the mitoribosome, which is essential for translation of mitochondrial-encoded proteins involved in oxidative phosphorylation. Mammalian mitoribosomes are distinct in composition from prokaryotic ribosomes, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio and different subunit components. MRPL19 is associated with pathways related to mitochondrial translation and peptide chain elongation and is noted in genetic studies for possible links to neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia[1][3][7][8].
