Overview

39S ribosomal protein L24, mitochondrial (MRPL24) is a structural protein encoded by the nuclear MRPL24 gene and is incorporated into the large (39S) subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome) in humans. It participates in mitochondrial protein synthesis by contributing to the structure and function of mitoribosomes, which differ from prokaryotic ribosomes in protein-to-rRNA composition and lack of 5S rRNA. MRPL24 is larger than its E. coli counterpart and is essential for the translation of mitochondrial-encoded proteins that are critical for oxidative phosphorylation and other mitochondrial functions[1][2][3][7].
