39S ribosomal protein L55, mitochondrial (MRPL55)

Target
MRPL55
Molecular classification
Mitochondrial ribosomal protein, Structural constituent of ribosome
01

Overview

39S ribosomal protein L55, mitochondrial (MRPL55) is a nuclear-encoded component of the large 39S subunit of the mammalian mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome)[1][3][6][7]. This protein helps facilitate translation of mitochondrial-encoded proteins necessary for mitochondrial function and energy production. Mammalian mitoribosomes are distinctly different from their prokaryotic counterparts in protein:rRNA ratio and protein sequence composition[3][6]. MRPL55 is not used as a therapeutic target, nor is it a receptor, channel, or enzyme; its main biological role is structural, enabling mitochondrial translation[1][3][6][7].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; no drugs known to target this protein directly

03

Biological functions

Mitochondrial protein synthesisStructural component of the mitoribosomeTranslation within mitochondria
04

Disease associations

Has gene-disease associations noted, but no direct implication as a disease driver; involved in various mitochondrial disorders through indirect gene variants or expression changesVarious expression/disease associations reported in datasets, but not a direct target for disease therapy
05

Safety considerations

None reported; as a structural ribosomal protein, direct targeting could affect mitochondrial function systemically
06

Biomarkers

Some studies may include MRPL55 in gene expression signatures for tissues/diseases, but it is not a canonical biomarker for therapy or patient selection
