5'-AMP-activated protein kinase subunit gamma-1 (PRKAG1)

Target
PRKAG1
Molecular classification
Enzyme subunit, Regulatory subunit
01

Overview

The AMP-activated protein kinase gamma 1 subunit (PRKAG1) is a regulatory component of the AMPK complex, a central energy sensor and regulator of cellular metabolism. It senses intracellular levels of AMP/ADP versus ATP, promoting activation of the catalytic α-subunit when energy is low. This leads to phosphorylation events that inhibit anabolic processes and stimulate catabolic pathways. PRKAG1 is crucial for metformin-mediated suppression of hepatic glucose production and is implicated in metabolic diseases.
