Overview

5'-Nucleotidase domain containing 1 (NT5DC1) is a human protein-coding gene that encodes an enzyme classified within the 5'-nucleotidase family, specifically belonging to the HAD (haloacid dehalogenase) superfamily[4][5]. It exhibits hydrolase and 5'-nucleotidase activity, likely involved in the hydrolysis of nucleotide monophosphates, thus participating in intracellular nucleotide metabolism[3][4]. While its precise biochemical substrate and physiological role remain uncertain, recent studies have linked NT5DC1 (and the NT5DC family) to cancer biology, most notably breast cancer, where altered expression correlates with clinicopathological features and patient outcomes[3]. NT5DC1 is also associated with rare inherited diseases like metaphyseal chondrodysplasia, Schmid type, and Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome 1[4]. There are currently no known drugs directly targeting NT5DC1, and its candidacy as a drug target remains under investigation.
